Today's offering is another Hasslefree miniature and another one that I have no real plan for, no excuses I just love the model - it's just lush! She is listed as "Dynamic" Jynx and can be found in the Modern adventure section on the website, this is what they have to say about her...

Jynx is a little bit of an odd mini for us, it delves into modern fantasy in a way that we don't normally do. She came about after a conversation on the Hasslefree Facebook page about miniatures for games like Shadowrun which are modern but also use magic and psychic powers etc.
Like all of the uber talented Mr White's figs this is very well sculpted, simple without loads of distracting detail, making it a joy to paint or it would have been if I hadn't been trying out a new technique for it....

This is the WIP for it, I'm not going to do this for everything I paint unless you guys are interested but I will for these Hasslefree models. Anyway first up is basecoat...
Then with shading
And finally some highlights that bring the figure up to a decent tabletop standard
And then I think why not add some lighting effects so it looks like the energy ball is glowing, looking this up I find a really great article on the GCT website for a Bushido figure I actually own. Getting all excited now and thinking of all the things I can do with this technique (energy balls, magic swords, lanterns etc) I reach for the paints and try it out.

Anyway by just looking at the mini you can see why she had to join the collection and although I don't currently have a rule set to use her for I was thinking of the "Shadowrun" type game (I remember the books...)

Oh gosh Andy. Seriously. I could show you a real life photo of me taken a while back, and you`d think it was modelled on me, it’s a dead on likeness, even the outfit is one of mine, I`m shocked hehe.. have you been peeping in my wardrobe *grins mischievously* yes I admit it, lately I`ve been modelling myself a bit on Elizabth Olsen as Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Well, I had just the wardrobe for it, so thought I`d try and pull the look off *doubt I manage to look at good as she does though* hehe.
ReplyDeleteAndy you have made this minis look perfect and I`m slightly envious just how lovely she looks. You`ve done it incredible justice, and I`m very impressed how nicely you`ve bought out the detail.
I do see the go-go (Kill Bill) thing that Stevvie spotted IF you`d have painted her that way, but now, wow, you`ve given her a whole new look. Much nicer actually, in my opinion.
Pure coincidence I promise T, I haven't been hiding in the bushes or your wardrobe **halo forming over head, smiling innocently**

I really like the painting on this model,(have to say I'm not the worlds biggest Hasslefree fan), and I think the lighting effect works, but might be a little heavy handed, perhaps adding a highlight in a lighter blue could add to the effect? Having said that you are a lot braver than me for even attempting this as I've never tried it myself!!

Thank you Roger, I think that was my worst worry too, it seems to have gone less of a glaze and more of a layer. I appreciate the comment more than you know :-)

DeleteJynx now resides in da Grotto and the various trials and tribulations involved in getting to her are many.....
This is a great mini and your paintwork is superb. I fondly remember "Shadowrun" when it first came out. I played it many times at my local Wargaming Club. That said, I can think of lots of uses for her in a number of games, settings and genres.

DeleteCoolio, hold on to them if you do, they are worth a pretty penny now. Both were written at a time when the new Open License had just come into play, and the laws were far from clear back then. I ended up falling foul of copyright infringement and some legal complications, and I pulled them from pubic availability. I think only a couple of thousand went out, and they are now as rare as rocket fuel.

DeleteGreat stuff Andy, and you've certainly attempted something I personally wouldn't have, nor did (as the attached Youtube link shows). However if I was going to do some lighting etc then I'd be watching this chap a few more times : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Je0zpTdwyjQ (as he paints Darth Vaders lightsabre glow). He certainly suggests repeatedly glazes etc.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely far trickier than I expected Simon, maybe with some more practice. There's a really great blog I follow with a chap who does this brilliantly but sadly no tutorial from him....

DeleteGreat job. My only Criticism would be the centre of the ball needs to be a bit brighter. It is very difficult I must admit and your on the right track with it.

DeleteLooks very good indeed. Not a technique for the fain of heart. It's given me considerable difficulty when I've attempted it.
DeleteSimon's right. The light source should be brighter than the light it casts on surrounding surfaces. The light's effect should diminish with distance from the source.
Also light takes a straight path and is blocked by intervening objects.
With this in mind, the left arm looks fine, the back of the right hand should be unaffected as it faces away from the light source, and the area below the source (the skirt) needs to be more involved.
Thanks Finch, that's really useful. You're right, not for the faint of heart, the mini gave me palpitations as the basic paint job looked more than adequate but I wanted to push my boundaries. These tips are gold for me thank you! Simon "Blaxcleric" link above is really good too so will be referring to that as well.
