a little diversion from the Bushido posts, not too far adrift though as we stay in the Orient. Recently I showed you some Bushido minis from my Temple starter set and was asked by Simon from Fantorical to show more WIP so included in this post are some WIP shots of the gorgeous Hanako.
Hanako is another excellent sculpt from the talented Kev White at Hasslefree Miniatures and can be found in the Modern martial artists section on their website. I got a bunch of new minis from them (well 4 but they chucked in a freebie which I'm well chuffed with and I'll show off later in another post). I have no real plans for her, so not sure what to do with her but she was just such a lovely sculpt. I wanted to do my best for Hanako and justify the purchase of her, scrubbing her in soapy water I prepped her for basing which would be the planking technique to represent her gliding across the wooden floors of a great Japanese house in defence of her Daimiyo.
I promise you I tried to clean up the mold lines but there was a whopper on her face and dress and i couldn't get it all off and thought it would be ok, however it is really, really visible and sadly it detracts from what i think is some of my best brushwork yet. Anyhoo enough rambling and onto the pics starting with the WIP and progressing through to the final version.

after the basic highlights I would normally stop and call it a job done, but as I said I really wanted to do a good job on the brushwork, so I decided to push it a bit further and paint a pattern onto her kimono, going with a cherry blossom motif. I also painted on eyebrows and lashes to break up her white makeup. To finish I painted a bamboo design on her Obi (sash).

Mould lines....the bane of every wargamers life!!! But I think you made a valiant effort painting her up. I do like the pattern of the pink spots on her dress.

DeleteTerrific stuff Andy. Pity about your trials and tribulations with the mould line - although I think you've hidden it rather well tbh. She does look very nice and fits in splendidly with your "Bushido" collection.

Very nice, Andy. I had looked at this figure as a possible future purchase, but was sorry to hear of the problems you had with the mold line. I suppose you could have painted the one on her face as a scar? And looks like you had one or two other purchases from Hasslefree, from what I can see lurking in the background...

It is unusual Joe, the usual quality requires very little "clean up" but I didn't want to risk damaging the detail.
