WIP - Pirate Ship part 3

Hi all

Another quick update as the ship project is now rolling on.  The sails are finished, painted and attached to the now painted hull. I added a staircase to the fo'castle and a crows nest to the main sail. The painting was completed in a couple of sessions using Spice Red emulsion for the red and the sails weathered with some home made washes that gave the sheets that salty spray look, some little stanchions were made from matchsticks to tie the rigging to the masts.

I still need to make the ships wheel and the rudder, more rigging and other bits and pieces like netting etc but it's coming on nicely

Hope you enjoy
dGG

  5. What I like (if I`m right from what I can see) is the way you have carefully made sure there is lots of flat open space, allowing you to set up miniatures and play a decent game on the space provided. Looking with a keen eye, it looks like to me like you have even taken your base sizes into consideration on the narrow bits.

This is really nice, and I would be ever so proud to have this is my own collection.

    1. You're absolutely right T, all of my terrain is designed to be totally playable and this is no exception, even the crows nest can take a 30mm base purposely :-) the fo'castle is left open and the aftcastle will only get the ships wheel. Nearly there mate ;-)

  7. All good stuff dGG, lots of nice detailing without interfering with its practical use.
Without knowing much about junks, for some reason I alays assume they were merely steered by rudder (i.e. no ship's wheel)

    1. That's a good point Joe, more investigation required I think. I don't know if they do either?

  9. Bearing in mind the fact that the crow's nest can hold a 30mm base, well...this thing is a beast! I would like to see a couple of figures on board, to give an idea of scale. A very impressive build, Andy.
One thing, however, the front sail looks a little odd - not sure if it's the relative height or the size. Truth be told, I'm no expert on Japanese maritime warfare, so I could be talking out of my hat. Looks like I'll be looking up pictures of junks on Google images today...

    1. The next post will have minis on it for comparison buddy. You could be right regarding the front sail, I tend to lose focus at some point in most builds and forget things like scale, accuracy, usefulness.....

but I'm sure it'll be alright, junks were eclectic to say the least with no real uniform design other than the distinct battening of the sails.

  10. da Gobbo Grotto I can see a part 2 and 3 but no part 1, have you hidden it somewhere specific?
