The Nerd Herd expects every man do his duty....

Hi all

"The Nerd Herd expects every man to do his duty..."

With these words of encouragement from Rich aka "Nerd4Life" ringing in our ears, Damon aka "Rulez" and I headed off to Bushido-Autumn Tournament at The Warboar Store, Bromley.  Wearing our Nerd Herd T-Shirts that I had printed up for when the Herd hit the shows, we drove the hour and a bit with our factions packed safely away in their various travel cases, i.e ice cream tub for Rulez' plastic KKZ and my metal ninja that I'd lent him for the tournie safely wrapped in foam. My completely metal warband was worrying as it was a long trip, but i used my anniversary gift for my transport and I took some superglue just in case.

Speaking of Warbands this is mine...

L-R Master Akari, Aiko, The Guardian, Koji's pack and Koji, (front) Earth Kami, (rear) Kenko-the North Tree
So my list was taken from the Temple of Ro-Kan faction and is lead by Master Akari, taken for his speed and agility, he is the defensive master! I took him along to frustrate my opponents heavy hitters and duck away to steal objectives, plus he's a f***ing fighting racoon!!.

an old photo hence the base is different now

Aiko was taken to provide support, her "blessings" are used to buff my other fighters, she was also to be used to distribute "Ki" (spirit energy) during the game ensuring those who need it most can fuel their "Ki feats".

again old photo

The Guardian is a 500lb Gorilla, who has formed an attachment to Aiko and can only be fielded when she is taken.  The Guardian is a bit of a gamble as he looks like he should be a front line fighter but he isn't!, he really needs to be used to back up an already engaged model and then he really shines with his huge damage bonus and ability to toss enemies about like rag dolls.  Although you don't need to take him when you take Aiko, I do because it feels right to have her unusual bodyguard with her. To give him a bit more survivabilty I gave him a couple of enhancements one which gave him some ranged protection and the most important one - Silverback, turning my big gorilla into an even bigger, more fear inducing monster!

i love this guy

Aiko and her Guardian

Keeping with my animal theme, I took Koji and his Pack the newest addition to da Grotto.  Koji would be used to focus and give all his "Ki" to Aiko to distribute, he also can be used to Scout and I would be using him to grab early objectives.  As for his Pack I wanted those cheeky monkeys to frustrate my opponents, sapping activations, getting in the way and using their sixth sense to spot ninjas and other sneaky fiends trying to creep up on my warband.

again the bases have been redone for the triangle and stripes

Next up is the Earth Kami, taken to provide a little bit of armour to my rather vulnerable fighters who tend to shun such heavy rainment. He can pass on some of his rocky properties by touching bases with my monks in the starting phase. He's also not a terrible fighter and can lend a rocky paw if need be.

not a great mini or photo, the Earth Kami none the less is essential

Lastly is my main fighter Kenko, the North Tree. I love this model, he is just so Shaolin its unbelievable! plus he provides some much needed muscle to a nicely themed but a little vulnerable faction.  He's tough, can boost his melee, speed, and damage and can buff nearby companions with one of his "Ki feats - Inspiration", he was an absolute must have!

Kenko caused so many problems

So that's my Warband...

Rulez took the Kaze Kage Zoku - Shadow Wind Clan, a ninja faction.  I'm gonna let Rulez take over and give you his reasoning behind his choices, but here's a picture of his warband

L-R, Bikhou, Katsumi, Shizuka and Kouhei
and words from Rulez himself, written before the tournament...

Why I choose the following models for KKZ to use in the tournament.

Well with only being able to field 4 models I need to be able to level the playing field numbers-wise against my opponent. So my first choice was easy, Bikou. At only 9 rice with shuriken and the Ki Feat Hail of Steel letting you fly of 3 shurikens at once will hopefully get rid of a few models. Proning models with her Kusari is also useful. Her other Ki Feat distraction is invaluable to use the Ninja's assassin trait.

My second choice was Shizuka. For the ViM scenario's I thought who better to be my ViM. With shadow walk she'll be able to move closer to the enemies side of the table to score VP's and with Mirage being able to take her away from danger, she's a no brainer for me.

My third choice was Katsumi. I needed a heavy hitter and he's quite badass with Brutal(1) and powerful attack. He has before taken out a powerful adversery in one round of melee! Also he's tireless and will hopefully soak up a few activations.

My fourth choice was a little harder. It was between Rin and Kouhei. Rin because she's another tireless model and has MS of 4. Kouhei as she also has the ki feat of Hail of Steel and working alongside bikou shooting out 6 shuriken in rapid sequence could prove fatal to even the most hardy of adversaries. So after play testing both models I went with Kouhei and she also brings a sixth sense model to the table.

This brought me to 40 rice leaving me 2 rice spare. This was easy to spend. I gave a shuriken to Kouhei along with poison weapons.  I also chose the House of the North Star theme, this gives me 2 further special cards which I decided would be Hotai's coin for Katsumi and an event card Smoke Bombs. Instant cover for my Ninja's when needed and also would allow the use of Shizuka's ki feat Shadow Walk when most needed in ViM scenarios. This theme card also gives a soulless model making Bikou's Distraction feat or Shizuka's Mirage an automatic success. Lastly but not least, once per game give out two spirit block tokens to a model of my choice.

I'm really looking forward to my first tournament, hopefully, I can get a couple of good results for the Shadow Wind Clan.

So those were the factions and the reasons why we chose the models that we did!  So how did we do? well the day started at 07:00hrs with Rulez picking me up for a journey should that only take an hour and a half.  The tournament was starting at 10:00 but we had no clue where it was or where the parking was hence the early start.

Nerds on Tour!!

As it happened we made good time and was there by 08:30 which meant we were at a loose end for an hour and a half - luckily for us Games Workshop are launching their return to the light side starting with BLOOD BOWL. One of my all time favourite specialist game from the big bad corp back when they had a soul. The GW store was two doors down from Warboar stores, a little close for comfort so we dropped in on the launch just as the store opened and managed to be the first to unbox the new game which looks absolutely stunning.

Rulez tears into the new boxset with glee!!

gorgeous miniatures
Maybe it's time to return to the fold especially when you see that the humour is back in the old girl...

jut behind the sign is a can of body spray!!
The manager of the Bromley store clearly has stepped up  to the challenge that has plagued games clubs since the dawn of time - the inexplicable fact that a percentage of gamers seem unable to master basic hygiene, one of the reasons why I have left numerous clubs in the past and had to game with a smaller group of folks, hand chosen who share the same values.... Sorry if that is offensive but most of us have experienced it and i'm glad someone has tackled it (plus I found it hilarious).

Anyway back to the tournament....

We arrived and registered with Mr Stu and made our way upstairs to the event room and let me just stop to digress again by saying just how brilliant a games store Warboar is.  It is just what you would want, clearly designed and staffed by gaming enthusiasts, the store is heaving with miniatures, games and board games of all kinds. Tables downstairs were filled with players of all types, playing scratch games and inviting people to sit down and join them.  D&D was being played next to Magic, next to some independent board game that I just didn't recognise, it was heaven - just a shame its so far away!  There is even a cafe on the premise so you don't even need to leave your seat.

Anyway back to the tournament.....

There were 14 players of all different ages and levels of ability and experience in the game. Everybody and I do mean everybody was friendly and welcoming and genuinely wanted to help and talk about the game.  What I have noticed about the Bushido crowd as well, is the openness and the honesty involved, no hidden army lists with awful surprises and spammy lists of filth.  You were allowed to read the cards of all of the factions, the theme cards, the special items everything!  This meant that the onus was with the player to use his tactics to win! And with the balance that Bushido has within the game, no faction has any real advantage over any other they just play differently - perfect!  Mr Stu has to be commended for the efforts he has put into his tournament, below are some of the boards he built for this and his first tournament, i'm so jealous as they are excellent.

and he's still wanting to do more!!

I was a little overwhelmed by the experience to take proper notes of my games, of which we all played four and I will let Rulez tell you about his games when he submits his report, but I will show you the pictures I took and give you a broad stroke of what happened.

My first game was against a really nice fellow from Hampshire - Rick.  He was playing a Cult of Yurei warband.  The Cult as you may remember from my post here, are a group of supernatural monster intent on destroying the delicate balance of the Jwar Isles. I have never faced them before, although I have played one game with the starter set, none of which featured in Rick's band, which was beautifully painted and actually won the painting competition.

preparation for my first battle!

The board was filled with four large yurts that worked totally in my favour and Rick's poor deployment aided the Temple cause as he was bottled up in the corner and was funneled into certain areas that I could control with Kenko and the Guardian, while my other characters could complete objectives and although the first scoring turn (turn 2) was a draw so no VP gained by either side I was able to score a much needed VP in the 4th turn.  In fact so bottled up was he that if the game would have made it to a 6th turn (the final scoring turn) I would have scored a 2-0 victory, as it was the game ended in turn 4 as we ran out of time with a 1-0 victory to me! Amazingly I had won my first competitive game, a very happy Gobbo I was! Rick was a lovely opponent and was a joy to play so I went onto my next game not worried what the result was to be as I had won one game (that was my highest aspiration for the day to win a single game!).

Next I played Luke, I'm not sure where Luke is from but again a thoroughly pleasant guy and a real pleasure to play against.  Luke bought a Tengu force, a bird like race of beings who live in the mountains of Jwar.  This faction was new to Luke, it was his second ever game with them although you wouldn't know it as he handled them really well and beat my boys to a deserved 0-1 loss to me.  The low point was when my Guardian charged his support model, who he should have creamed only to be killed outright by a well timed counter-charge by his powerful bird samurai. Luke had managed to paint one of the figures and it looked really good so it will be nice to see the warband when they are all finished!  This game could have been a whitewash for me so I was glad when Mr Stu called time on it before Luke could finish the job and it mean I lose more tournament points.

During lunch we had to decide on the "Best Painted Warband" competition, there was a lot of really well painted miniatures but the winner, well deserved was Rick's Cult.

Ashley's Ashigaru force

Rick's Cult of Yurei

Jack's Peasant Temple of Ro-Kan

Pirates - not sure who's

Ninjas, again not sure who did it but the ninja on the right is in disguise which is one of his traits, the disguise was custom made and it looked brilliant!

After lunch I faced off against Ashley, again from Hampshire and got my nomination for best sportsman of the tournament, a real gentleman. Ashley had bought with him an Ashigaru warband from the Prefecture of Ryu, with only a single Samurai.  This game was absolutely nail biting as it was zonal control and it all kicked off big time in my zone as Ashley pressed really hard. Fortunately for me my big "man" stepped up! my MVP had to be the Guardian as he scared the bejezzus out of the majority of his force as they failed fear test after fear test and refused to charge into melee with him and when he took the fight to them he tossed them about like rag dolls throwing the Samurai into his soldiers time and again. My favourite moment was truly grizzly as he chucked the corpse of one of Ashley's ashigaru into another one, bowling him over.  The game was heading for a 0-0 as neither of us seemed able to break the deadlock until we both remembered the final victory condition which was that a nominated model needed to be closer to the opponents table edge than the other.  Almost at the same time we both made the realisation and darted our VIMs (Very important Models) toward each others edge.  I sacrificed Aiko, who is a dreadful fighter and was going to get slaughtered, but crucially meant that Ashley's VIM couldn't progress any further.  My VIM was Master Akari who is a lot more agile and using a huge amount of "Ki" he darted through the press and dashed for Ashley's table edge and with his last activation got closer winning me the VP, 1-0 to da Gobbo!!

So I had two wins and a loss and was looking at placing! what?!? I just had to do well in the last game, dare I dream??

Well first I had to face Paul's Cult.  I was hoping to face a different faction just to get more exposure to them but Paul's force was different to Rick's so it was still good.  Paul was a terrific opponent and he looked to be cruising to an easy victory when he destroyed the Guardian in one shot and wounded Kenko to within an inch of his life. However the last game was "The Messenger" and it centres around a hidden VIM.  That VIM has to get into your opponents deployment zone which is a six inch square in the opposite corners, so it wasn't about killing your opponents models - although it doesn't help!  With the crippling of my main fighters I had to play a hail mary, now in this particular game you can gain a VP by revealing your VIM in your opponents deployment area before they do and this gets you a single VP, what happens after that though is that your VIM gets targeted because he is now open, not hidden and the remaining 2 VPs are acquired by killing the opponents VIM while keeping yours alive.  My hail mary was to gain that early VP and the try to keep my VIM - Master Akari again, alive.  Using an extraordinary amount of "Ki" I ran Master Akari nearly the length of the board and using his agility sneaked through is blocking fighters to score.  What followed was a cat and mouse game with his scary monsters trying to catch and kill the elusive Yokai. Thankfully he held out against the odds and I scraped a 1-0!!!

Kenko surrounded by monsters, but still fights on bravely

even Koji's tiny monkeys played their part fighting back the darkness and distracting the Cult from Akari
So the day ended with three 1-0 victories for me and a 0-1 loss giving me 21 points.  However I was pipped to third place by a very lucky win in the last game by Matt, a really nice bloke who was gobsmacked that he had placed. So I finished fourth... but how did Rulez do well he finished first!! after two very amazing 3-0 wins, a 2-1 and a 1-1 he scored a terrific 30 points to take top spot in his first ever tournament!  The Nerd Herd wins!!!

third place Matt with Prefecture of Ryu

second place - Jack with his Temple

Damon "Rulez" of the Nerd Herd - first place with his KKZ
Rick who won Best Painted

Ben - Best Sportsman (joint....)
Rick won Best Painted Warband with his beautiful Cult of Yurei and Ben - above, won (joint) "Best Sportsman" pictured with his prize, as there was only one prize Mr Stu rolled a dice to see who would get the prize and it was Ben, who literally helped his opponents during the game so that they could more enjoy the experience.....

so who was he joint with? yep you guessed it, it was me!  As we received the same amount of votes and there was only one prize Mr Stu rolled a dice to see who would get the prize and..... I was beaten to it by a dice roll, story of my gaming life - hahaha. Ah I thought he was a good guy too so who can be cross with that, I must admit I was flattered though that people thought enough of my playing style to vote for me.

And that was that, my first comp in about 20 years, Rulez' first comp ever and a ball was had.  We finally rolled home at 21:30 so it was a long day, but what a day!!

hope you enjoy

Bushido Tounament

Hi all

Tomorrow is mine and Damon "Rulez" Carlton's very first Bushido Tournament.  It's being held at the Warboar Store in Bromley (about an hour's drive from my house) and is hosted by Mr Stu - a newly designated "Retainer" (Bushido expert, they have to pass a knowledge test to become one!). This is Mr Stu's second tournament and I'm stupidly excited to be attending, I haven't been to a tournament in well over a decade.

Rulez and I have been "training" for this tournament for the last 8 weeks or so, choosing our factions and the warriors within them, honing our tactics and practising the rules over and over.

I decided pretty early on that I was going to take my Temple of Ro-Kan faction and it was just a case of picking the particular models that suited my style of play and most importantly fit my sense of aesthetic, now this may seem strange to some of the more competitive of you, but I pick most of my models because of the "fluff" and the look of the minis rather than just their combat prowess, I find that this method helps me to get into the game more and is therefore far more enjoyable for me, although I do tend to lose as many as I win as a result.

Rulez has gone with Kaze Kage Zoku ninja faction,  this is the first faction that he bought since playing the game (he was using my Prefecture of Ryu models up until recently) and the second painted warband he has produced ever! and I must say he's done a great job of them.  He literally decided that he would use KKZ last week, having "ummed and ahhed" over the last couple of months between them and Ryu.

I will post our lists and of course the pictures of the warbands we will be taking up as well as pics from the day and a little write up about the tournament itself following the event.

Wish us luck

Statues!

Hi all

another Bushido post, although these statues could be used in a number of settings.  Although I have built a couple of boards for Bushido and have two more planned (when I can find the time...) I have very little scatter terrain to decorate them and for those sneaky ninjas to duck lurk behind.

When I was at Broadside earlier this year I managed to grab a couple of "Ainsty's" blisters from Col. Bills, I had no specific use for them but they were clearly oriental in origin and would fit my Bushido collection somewhere.  Due to painting commitments and other projects they slipped further and further down the painting queue until they dropped off and ended up in my storage (for shame!).

Anyhoo, I was having a root around the other day, thinking about the next board that I'm going to plan when I stumbled across them again and here they are.

As you can see I got the "Buddha Statue" which I think was £4 and the "Temple Dogs" which were £6 for a pack of two.  After giving them a quick scrub, I sprayed them with a cheap grey primer.  I then liberally coated them with Vallejo "Medium Sea Grey" before washing them first in a very, very watered GW "Nihilakh Oxide" and then a generous coat of Army Painter "Strong Tone".  I then gave then a drybrush of the base coat.

I wanted the Temple Dogs to have the suggestion that they could animate in the manner of the Oki Shisha.  This is the blurb from the GCT website,  there is a use for Oki Shisha in Bushido and they can be a part of the Temple of Ro-Kan faction....

The defence of the oldest temples and most sacred shrines is often entrusted to the great Oki Shisa. Mountains of ever watchful stone, still and silent for decades but always ready. None know how many Oki Shisa there are but these holy wardens are the bane of those who would attempt to manipulate their Ki against the Temple or hold sway over the land. The enchantments that gift the Shisa protection also imbue the stone with a keenness akin to a Masamune blade.

With that in mind I painted the eyes of the statues with GW "Teclis Blue" and highlighted with GW "Lothern Blue" and then a further pure white highlight. However I wanted to make them look like they were glowing so I tried my hand at light sourcing again.  Using extremely watered down paint consisting of a mixture of the two blue colours I built up some very thin layers around the upper most surfaces that would be hit by the light of the glowing eyes.  As light travels in straight lines in meant that any surface that was tucked away would not be glazed (if that makes sense?).  Any mistakes were quickly corrected when I applied the finer highlights on the stone faces with a lightened base colour.

not a great photo but it should show the glowing eyes

Finally I added some homemade moss which consists of PVA mixed with flock and green ink and brushed onto the model

Now I know that they aren't made up of the same sandstone that my Temple board consists of but I wanted these to fit into multiple settings, so I stuck to the more traditional greyish look (sorry Zab)

 Hope you enjoy

Judge Dredd winnings!!

Hi all

A very quick post today as I have very little time due to some pressing essay deadlines (only a mere 2000 word procedural critique and a 3000 word research critique...).  However I could not let my amazing good fortune to pass without some reference.  A little while ago Bryan of "Vampifan's World of the Undead" fame posted an excellent article regarding 2000ADs upcoming 2000 issue, you can read it here. I'm a big fan of 2000AD and although haven't been keeping up with the latest progs, I have lasting memories of avidly reading the adventures of Judge Dredd, Johnny Alpha and Nemesis the Warlock amongst many others.  In celebration of their 2000th edition Bryan put up a little blog competition to win some JD goodies and long story short - I won!

To say I was pleased is a massive understatement, I was giddy with excitement! now if you have read the post (if not, why not? after all I did furnish you with a link - here it is again, now off you go I can wait...... **drums fingers on the table**......are you back? good, good i'll carry on then) you will have seen the sheer size of the intial giveaway - Hammerstein the ABC warrior, Street Judge, Cursed Earth Desperado and the Ape Gang (10 minis) plus 8 Heroclix inc 3 of the Dark Judges - Fire, Fear and Mortis, Judge Dredd himself and Hershey as well as a Brit Cit Judge and Johnny Alpha and Torquemada.  That's a very impressive 18 miniatures as a prize all winging their way to me, Bryan did say he (maybe) was going to add a couple of other models.  Imagine my surprise when I open this lot then....

I make that an amazingly generous 21 miniatures with the addition of Judge Dredd, two SJS judges and a Med Judge (of course).  I'm so grateful for Bryan's generosity, I truly am! what a great hobby we have....

It will take me a while to work my way through that lot due to uni but I will take lots of WIP photos and hope you guys out there will follow the progress of these with me.  Gaming wise I already have the Judge Dredd Miniatures Game (JDMG) but now because of this prize I have added Judge Dredd the Role-playing Game (JDRPG) to my Pdf bank along with a whole host of cheap supplements, this is because of Mongoose losing the licence to produce these games and because of THAT they have reduced the cost by at least 75%, some of the supplements being as little as 25p!  It looks like the Nerd Herd maybe treading the streets of MC-1 in the future....

hope you enjoy

ATZ - an English Adventure (concluding part of Day One)

Hi all

***warning another long post, get the kettle on!***

The concluding part of Day One, if you missed the first part then you can find it Here

Shaun is set upon...
Shaun turned as he felt the brush of a cold hand touch the back of his bare arm, twisting his upper body and dragging the limb out of reach of the infected female that had tried to stop him. With the momentum he gained he dropped low and stuck out his trailing leg, tripping the zombie and causing another to crash into the stricken creature. With both of the zeds down it was relatively easy for him to drop the heavy cricket bat onto the heads of the zombies, putting them out of their misery. Beatrice had stopped and watched him finish the zombies off, nodding in approval before pointing with her massive iron frying pan at two more of the infected citizens of Margate that were following closely behind. Shaun squared his shoulders and hefted the polished willow bat before stepping back into the fray.

and deals with it!
Constable Smith was distraught, his first fracas with a wrong’un and he had killed them with his ASP. The weighted baton had connected solidly with the male’s head and dropped him to the ground with a thud. Smith had checked for a pulse and couldn't find one. On his knees by the body he wept as the feeling of remorse tore through him, he was meant to be a guardian, a protector of life not the taker of one. Standing shakily to his feet he turned to head back to the sarge who was staring at him in horror. He thinks I'm a monster, Smith thought to himself.  I AM a monster he added, thinking on the sarge’s wide eyed gaze that seemed to look passed him, maybe at the victim he concluded.

A low moaning sound, followed by the scrape of shoes dragging across tarmac spun Smith around just in time as the body of the victim of his assault crashed into him with open arms, nearly dragging him to the ground [random event – a previously killed zombie returns back to life].  In horror the PC lifted his baton again in self-defence, shoving it deep into the open mouth of the zombie, smashing teeth and cracking its jaw in the process. Drawing his arm back, he withdrew the ASP pulling more teeth with it and pulling the zombie’s face closer to Smith, who gagged at the smell of rotten meat on the infected breath.  Using the heavy butt of the baton he cracked the zed in between the eyes twice in quick succession forcing the zed to the floor. With tears still streaming down his cheeks, Smith stomped his heavy, steel tipped boots into its face, cracking the skull and stopping its attack in an instant. Smith ground to a halt suddenly drained of all energy as he tried to process what had happened over the last few minutes. Horrified at his actions he looked desperately over at the sarge for some guidance only to see another creature detaching itself from the shadows of a nearby tree and shuffle toward his superior officer with murderous intent.

PC Smith is attacked by a teenaged zombie

sgt. Ellis is also in trouble (top left)

St. Ellis caught movement from the corner of his eye, despite his lack of bravery Ellis had been a copper for over twenty years and instinctively his hand went to the canister of PAVA on his right hip. Something wasn’t right though, the scrote was moving all wrong, unnaturally, jerkily like a puppet with the strings all tangled together. Up came the right hand and with no official warning (the natural rules follower in Ellis winced but the coward prevailed!) he triggered the spray in a long plume of pelargonic acid vanillylamide or pepper spray, that splashed across the face of the assailant. Ellis’s cry of triumph was cut short as the milky white eyes of the creature remained locked on him as it reached out blood soaked hands. Stumbling backwards, trying to stay out of reach of that gore covered grip, Ellis fumbled for his ASP forgetting which side it was attached to in his haste and instead drawing out his standard issue handcuffs. Too late to rectify his mistake he swung the heavy steel bands, using them like a crude knuckle duster and punching the zombie in the face with a heavy right haymaker that rocked the zeds head back and knocked a few of those awful, bared teeth out of its mouth. The momentum of the swing caused the sarge to become unbalanced and he teetered on the edge of the curb nearly falling to the ground. Instinctively knowing that to fall would leave him wide open to attack, he pin-wheeled his arms in an effort to stay on his feet giving the zombie another opportunity to bite at him. Ellis cried out in fear as he felt the jaws closing on his left forearm and he battered at the head of the infected citizen with the steel cuffs, desperate to free himself from the grip of the zombie. Incoherent expletives poured from his mouth and tears ran freely down his cheeks as he drove the hardened metal into its face over and over and with ever increasing power, fuelled by terror and the insanity of the situation he did not, could not stop until the creature finally slid to the floor in a graceless heap, it's face and head a pulpy ruin [the fight between the sarge and the zombie went on for four rounds!].

Unseen by Police Sgt Ellis and Police Constable Smith, intelligent eyes had observed the struggles that they had had with the infected people of Margate, the brutality of their fight and the finality of the officers dealing with the incident had been noted in a little notebook that was always carried, always to hand when needed. More words were scribbled – no warning given! Excessive force! Police brutality! This was going to make a great story. Despite the horror that she had witnessed since the devastation caused by Storm Daenerys and the odd explosion off the east coast, April Nillson – journalist and roving reporter for an independent news channel couldn’t hide her glee as she thought of the hard hitting (haha) expose of Her Majesty’s finest beating citizens to death that she would broadcast, that was if she could find her camera man Bobby and get the blasted story out there.  Whatever was going on in Thanet, all the violent episodes from its local folks, all the damage from Daenerys, all the lives lost and many hundreds of injured all the battles being fought over life and death in the hospitals by the medical professionals – all of that was overshadowed by this moment, this story right here! This was going to get her onto a mainstream media outlet for sure.  All she had to do was get out of here alive, easier said than done but she was resourceful and smart.  So far she had got away with dressing up in the ragged blood covered garments of one of the infected locals who had been savaged by a huge Rottweiler over by the Millmead housing estate.  The smell was ghastly but seemed to confuse the senses of the “zombie” like people.  By adopting their characteristic “broken marionette” movements, that almost had her chuckling she was able to move about a bit more freely.  Taking a quick photo with her phone and with one last look at the policeman who was now busy throwing up next to the bloodied mess that was all that was left of the former infected human being, April pulled up the dirty hood of the fleece she was wearing with a grimace at the stench and melted back into the shadows [there was another random event where a zombie was revealed a survivor, however it was right on the edge of the board and in the next turn she was able to leave the board straight away! This won’t be the last we hear of April Nillson though no doubt….].

a roving reporter

Constable Smith saw the flash of light that seem to come from the deep shadows by the train station, “who the hell is taking pictures?” was his first thought followed very quickly by “what did they just see?” That however was a worry for another time as more movement, a lot closer to him bought him back to what was happening right here.  A teenaged girl, no older than his younger sister charged directly at him.  Covered in blood and with the manic look that had been plastered over his other assailant, the girl advanced on Harry with her mouth open wide fully intent on taking a chunk out of the officer.  At first Smith tried to just fend her off, slapping aside her hands and talking - no pleading with her to stop, to back down, leave him alone, to go back home! However, it was apparent to him that she wasn’t going to stop attacking him, in fact she had already nipped him and drawn blood from his left arm and it had only served to spur her on and the attacks had become more frenzied.  Screaming, part in desperation and part in fury he kicked out with his heavy boots, clearing some space and allowing him to whip his ASP in a deadly arc, connecting with the underside of the girl’s chin and snapping her head back with a loud crack.  Without another sound the infected fell to the ground and didn’t stir.

With the patient on board the ambulance the medics were in a flurry of activity, connecting monitoring leads onto the girl’s arms and legs, attaching an oxygen mask to her face and running up another bag of fluid in an effort to stabilise her before racing to the hospital [the medics don’t activate…].  The police officers that had stayed to help the patient and assist the medics jumped down from the back of the crowded ambo to not only give the medics more space to work in but they had spotted more of those infected/dangerous people approaching the vehicle in that jerky, spasmodic motion that somehow managed to cover ground in a relatively swift way.  Drawing their ASPs both officers stood near the rear doors of the truck as the zombies (yeah they both felt that word was adequate for these ‘people’) drew nearer.  PC Mike Spalling edged in front of WPC Anita Hives much to her annoyance at his overprotective stance, however looking at the blank faces and broken gait she was grateful none the less that he was in the way as the narrow approach between the ambulance and the hedges funnelled the zeds one at a time, if he wanted to be all macho that was fine by Anita she had a family that she wanted desperately to get back to, in fact as soon as this ambo was gone so was she! She’d go back to the nick, load up her gear and get back to her kids.  Ahead of her Spalling had already downed the first of the assailants and was just dropping the heavy end of his ASP onto the crown of the last zombie’s head with a loud crunch that made Anita wince.  Blood streaming from a little nip on Mike’s forearm, he turned to her with a worried look, “let’s get those fucking medics moving Hives, then we can get the fuck out of here, these bastards are giving me the shits!” emphasising each expletive with a savage kick to the creature on the floor. With a nod Anita slapped the side of the truck and screamed at the occupants to get moving, never once taking her eyes off of the bite mark on her partner’s arm.

Shaun swung the willow cricket bat with all the technique he could muster crunching the blade of the bat into the temple of the first zombie and was already stepping through the blow as the creature was falling to the ground. With a flick of his wrists he turned the momentum of the heavy weapon back on itself and delivered another stunning blow to the zed that trailed behind crushing its skull with a mighty thud, that he felt right up his arms.  As the last zombie crashed to the floor, Shaun was looking passed them at the group of people running full tilt in his direction. Squinting his eyes, he could make out that they were uninfected and just a bunch of scared Margatonians. With a shrug he turned back to his new companion and gestured to the big Haitian woman, Beatrice “Shall we?”  he drawled with a grin that this time reached his eyes and lit up his face with dry humour.  Trying to scowl at the man, she folded her arms across her expansive chest, her enormous iron frying pan dangling from her right hand, before returning his grin with a brief one of her own. “You’re crazy sugar” she laughed as she threaded her left arm through his and the pair sauntered off down the road and away from the crowd of panicking people.

Andy stuck his head out of the back of the truck, trying to look in all directions at once.  Seeing no zombies in the immediate vicinity, none that were standing that was, he stepped out onto the road hefting the bloodstained oxygen cylinder in his right hand.  As he made his way down the side of the truck he noticed the blood trickling down the PC’s arm, “do you want me to clean and dress that dude?” he asked with a nod at the wound.  Spalling shook his head and pointed up at the hospital that loomed in the near distance, “naw mate, I’ll be fine just get her there will you. I’ll get this cleaned up back at the nick.”  Nodding Andy made his way to the cab and scrambled into the driver’s seat firing up the big diesel engine as he went.  Glancing into the rear of the vehicle through the viewing hatch he saw that Anna had sat in the attendant’s seat and shouted through for her to buckle up. Reaching above him to the lights console he slapped the “999” switch that engaged the emergency beacons and pressed his foot on the footplate that operated the sirens before peeling away in a cloud of tyre smoke.
Fanning the smell of burning rubber out of her nostrils, WPC Hives looked at her colleague and gestured toward the squad car around the corner where they had left the sarge and the kid.  PC Spalling nodded and they both broke into a jog heading toward Station Road.  Sgt Ellis by this time had had the same idea, as he sat by his puddle of vomit (and the broken body of the man he had pummelled) he longed for the sanctity of the police station and its familiar corridors. Looking over at the tear stained face of PC Harry Smith, he gestured kindly to the stricken boy and pointed at the car.  Turning quickly, he got behind the wheel of the Skoda Octavia and twisted the key, savagely gunning the engine.  Smith dived into the passenger side and quickly slammed the door just as Spalling and Hives piled into the back of the “panda car”.  Slamming his foot to the floor, Ellis turned the steering wheel full lock causing the back end to whip around facing the car in the right direction, dropping the hand brake the sarge barely kept the car under control as it leapt forward like a horse bolting from a burning stables, throwing the passengers back into their seats.

Andy “Gobbo” Wosa skilfully guided the ambulance around the surprisingly tight corners around the hospital, still moving the truck at high speed and with sparing touches to the brake he negotiated the narrow approach road that led to the ambulance entrance at the Accident and Emergency department of the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother hospital [Gobbo passes a rather astonishing series of drive tests!].  So intent on his driving was he that he failed to hear the loud crunch of tortured metal nor see the rising smoke column that came from the direction that they had just come from….

Sgt Ellis, fear driving him like he drove the powerful squad car, pushed his foot flat to the floor as the images of the last few minutes played over in his head on a loop like crystal clear CCTV footage.  The “panda” responded eagerly and the big engine propelled the vehicle forward at high speed.  [sgt barely makes his drive skill test here] Ellis jerked the wheel to the right in an attempt to negotiate a gentle bend and over the level crossing, bumping the car over the tracks and causing the wheels to lose traction as the left the ground briefly.  With the sarge lead foot pushing the accelerator down hard, the tyres spun as they hit the tarmac skidding and failing to grip the road [Ellis failed his drive test and the car skidded forward d6 inches, I rolled a 6!, gulp].  PC Harry Smith looked up just in time to see the squad car heading toward a solid brick wall that separated the road from the old gas works, in the back PC Mike Spalling crossed himself and braced just as the Octavia hit the wall with a speed approaching 70 miles per hour.  WPC Anita Hives, prayed that her husband would keep her children safe as she felt herself lifted out of the backseat with the force of the impact… [Ellis never regained control of the car as he failed yet another drive skill test and couldn’t swerve out of the way, hitting the wall with disastrous results.]

the sarge loses control with fatal results

With the final flick of the brakes, Andy bought the ambulance to a safe halt just outside of the A&E doors.  Jumping down from the cab he headed to the back of the truck and opened the door before operating the tail lift.  Anna was already disconnecting the monitoring equipment from the mounting on the back of the vehicle and connecting the oxygen mask to the mobile canister that Gobbo had brained the zombie with.  Between the two of them they manoeuvred the trolley off of the ambulance and pushed the patient through the double doors of the A&E and into a scene of bedlam.

A Poll

Hi guys

With my first Bushido tourney coming up on the 12th November, I obviously want my warband to look its very best (painted figs fight harder!). To that end I wanted to conduct a poll regarding the look of the bases on my miniatures as I'm conflicted, as is the opinion within the Nerd Herd.

Image result for poll

So, as I've been banging on 'ad nauseum' is that Line of Sight (LoS) is imperative in Bushido particularly around surprise attacks etc.  As most miniatures are in dynamic poses it is often difficult to determine where the figure is directing their attention! In order to make this easier for all involved the helpful people of GCT studios suggest that you indicate on the base a LoS arc (180 degrees to the front). As they are keen modellers and players themselves they know that people would rather not have prescriptive bases that are all uniform and that takes away the painting/creative aspect of the hobby, so they have left it to the individuals devices to determine how that would look as long as it is clear.

As regular readers of this blog will know I've never been truly happy with the way I have done the bases so now I'm going to leave it up to you guys. So far the majority of the minis in my collection have a generally black base rim with coloured triangle/stripe markings, however recently I've been blending in the faction colours in a stripe around the front arc. I will show you examples of both types of LoS markings, if you can ignore the miniatures and just let me know which style you prefer.
So the first two pics show my Temple of Ro-Kan markings in triangle/stripes

the next two show the blended stripes for the Temple

and for the Prefecture of Ryu in triangles/stripes

and again in the blended stripes

and my latest factions I have only done the blended bases so far

so genuinely looking for you criticism here guys, which style should it be. Competition is coming up soon so am looking for the answer and quick

cheers
