The force is strong in this one...

Hi all

Image result for x wing miniaturesnot a very original title for this post, but I had my first games of X-Wing last night.  I know, I know where have i been for the last couple of years? In my defence I've been attempting to limit the number of new games I take on in recent times - boxes and boxes of unused games and miniatures, some still in their cellophane wrappings line the shelves of da Grotto.  That said, both Rich and Chris took an interest in X-Wing at Salute! this year and bought into the game.

So Rich hosted a gaming night last night, the first we've had in months, it was just me and him as the other members of the Herd were busy, so we took down his sadly under-used fleets and took them for a spin.

I lost...

a lot....

but I really loved the game, so did I lose?

.....erm yes.....yes I did....all of them...

but I did really love the game.  Nice simple mechanic, not too many tokens on the board (unlike my beloved Bushido) and beautiful, cinematic miniatures.  Rich put on some Star Wars music and the room was filled with the sounds of us trying to impersonate the whine of a Tie Fighter engine (bet you're all doing it right now!).  Yes I even piloted the "Millenium Falcon" resulting in it's destruction - twice!  A sad, sad day for the rebellion...

So better late than never, I 'm loving a bit of X-Wing and it's going on the shopping list.

hope you enjoy

  1. Yep, X-Wing is a favourite game of mine too. I'm rocking the old TIE/LN Squadron, myself. Twelve TIE fighters with nothing but a few modifications, unique pilot talents and a number of elite upgrades. Very satisfying when you win with just TIE fighters, and using them really cuts out the need for all the other types of upgrades (though I also have a TIE 'Punisher' Flight, which needs a 101 upgrade cards!).

    - PAW 2018. Unfortunately another chap is going to be working that show (I'm doing Bournemouth and Cardiff), so I won't get to see your game in the flesh. But I should be around other shows in 2018, so might get chance to meet with yourself, then.

    1. I’ve deliberately, until yesterday, avoided the game as I knew I’d be sucked in straight away! Damn it! Now I need to start looking for ships that suit my play style - terrible....

Shame mate, would love to have chatted, I’m based in the south east so I don’t get to the western shows, PAW aside (I was invited). I’m going to Salute! 2018, so if you’re there I’ll look you up!

  2. I think we must be in sync! :) We have been playing x-wing for the last month or so at school and the chaps love it. I bought into it a while back, but was feeling a pang of guilt every time I walked past the boxes. What with the new films the love for Star Wars seems to have been passed down to another generation - wonderful news. Sound effects are mandatory!

  3. It looked great but this is not a game for me. Still, I can see the appeal and I hope you get a lot of fun out of it. Sorry that you lost but better luck next time.

    1. Difficult to play solo mate, but it is a corker if a game

    2. There's a couple of solo mechanics for X-Wing that I know about, probably you do too as they've been around for a while.

Heroes of the Aturi Cluster is a solo campaign, playing as the Rebels.

Or there's this one for one-off games:

There's probably others, but those are the two I know about.

  4. X-Wing is game I have played many times and enjoyed immensely every time. The events at the table are always varied and give a different result every time, and always accompanied with squeals of laughter and cheers of success from the players (and those just watching) at a lucky dice roll. I keep telling the guys they should get it: if you like Imperial Assault, then you`ll like X-Wing basically. Lovely post Andy and nice photographs of the cool models. I love the game mat.

    1. It is a cool game and has a really cinematic feel to it. The pre-painted models are done to a good standard, meaning you can just jump in. The mat is Rich’s and it really added to the feel of the game.

  5. Even though you lost, looks like you had great fun, and that's the real thing at the end of the day. The ships are very cool and own a couple myself

  6. Yea, wow great article Andy and makes me wish we owned this game, to go with our Imperial Assault. The eye candy of your photos is just so alluring.

  7. Oh for goodness sake, Andy, stop tempting me with more "Star Wars" goodness!! I own "The Force Awakens" starter set, but haven't had chance to open it yet... and then you post this... I need to be strong :-)

  10. In your best Yoda voice...."If playing the game ENJOYED you did, WON you must have" :-)
Glorious looking game Andy - thankfully I have far too many things on my plate at the mo, but it is SO tempting!

  11. X-Wing doesn't really do a lot for me, despite my love of aerial games (especailly compy ones), I;ll stick to WIngs of War if ever in the need

  13. As with Imperial Assault, I do yearn after a bit of SW gaming and the idea of crushing the Rebellion with my legion of TIE fighters has a certain appeal, but the price of the individual ships is quite high. Of course, I COULD scatch-build some and adapt my FInal Frontier rules for smaller scale combat...hmmm, something to ponder.
