Today's post was brought to you by the letter "V"

hi all
Image result for ragnar lothbrok
Another quick post of some miniatures I've painted during my limited downtime.

First we have a dude, you may recognise him as a dead ringer for Ragner Lothbrok of "Vikings" fame. This Kev White special from Hasslefree miniatures is listed as Ulfred a warrior from the cold north and was a purchase from Salute!

I took the "dynamic" version, there is one of him with his thumbs in his belt.  Paint wise, although it was tempting to paint him in the all black of the character I ended up using some blue to relieve the monotony of the scheme.  Of course he had to be a Nordic blonde as do all my vikings!

Image result for lagertha lothbrokUlfred is married to Haleth, at least he was.... another Viking look alike this time a ringer for Lagertha (Ragnor's first wife). This was also purchased at Salute! this year.

Haleth is a shield maiden, as warrior of great skill and cunning and the leader of her own band of raiders.

Paintwise, I kept with the simple colours that I used for Ulfred.  For her shield I painted the nordic rune for Odin on the front and I added some red warpaint, just because I can......

To complete a Viking trio we have Tilda, also from Hasslefree she was purchased last year and I've shamefully only just got around to slapping paint on her.  Tilda is another shield maiden and I loved the character of this mini so much I had to get her.

Finally V is also for Vultures! These are Wargames Foundry and when I was looking for sewer alligators for my dungeon tiles I found them and on a whim I snapped them up. No plan for them just thought they were cool....

Hope you enjoy
dGG

  1. Lovely job on the trio they all look great together. Does Tilda not have a smaller cousin?

    1. Cheers Dave, the photos don't do the vultures justice if I do say so myself as I put loads of effort into their plumage.

  4. Vultures. Yay! (22 species of Vultures in the world)

The Vikings look good as well although perhaps too many axes. Not yuor fault but the sculptors. Axes were used but not always by the high ranking who could afford a sword.

    3. That s the problem isnt it T. We`re in the same boat with Doctor Who. We`ve finally gotten massively into DW and have watched up to near the end of season 4 (three episodes to go) and still have series 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 to go **gulp** just to catch up to where the rest of the world is now, and started to learn back in 2005. Okay we now have all but series 10 waiting for us to watch, on DVD, but its so hard when we are so far behind and everyone and their cat is ahead of us and cant help talking about it lol. We`re like a century behind and its hard to avoid spoilers. That`s why we went mad and bought so many boxed sets all in pretty short order. We just KNEW it would be impossible to keep the lid on spoilers if we took our sweet time and watched things at a more leisurely pace **grins**. As it is, just to `catch up` were watching about 3 or 4 episodes an evening, every day.

  7. Tilda is the female version of Obelix from the comics Asterix and Obelix, I presume most might know them... maybe :)

Hasselfree Miniatures is defiantly something that one need own at least one miniature from :)

    1. I would love pretty much the whole range with very few exceptions, sadly they are a bit pricey

    2. For Miniatures of that much detail they are not really that pricy, you should see how much the resin minis cost, they are pricy :)

  8. Nice work on the Vikings, never watched the series myself, so they are a bit lost on me. My preferred Ulthred is the one from the "Warrior" series by Bernard Cornwell, but again I wont watch the series as I read a few of the Sharpe books before I saw the show, and it bu**ered up my imagined versions of the characters, so as I love the books I now stay well away from the Warrior TV series!

The vultures are fun, cheers Roger.

  11. There does seem to be a lot of interest in shield maidens recently, both in TV dramas and by miniature manufacturers. It did occur to me that I could build an entire SAGA warband from different female Viking figures, though I doubt very much that this would be historically plausible :-) .

    1. You're probably right in both counts Hugh ;-)

  12. As C6 implies, "shield- maidens" seem to be flavour of themonth and everyone to have them in the collections, your Hasslefree Lagetha and Ragnar were a good ckocie (not too sure on Hilda though)
I do like that you've given them a littlemorecolour than their TV counterparts.

    1. So it appears mate, I really like Kev's sculpts. I think all black would have been a big boring

  13. I have been told that Viking Shield Maiden figures are very popular sellers. From a business viewpoint; Profit.
I've also been told that my own suggestions on figures to have sculpted wouldn't be popular. Bum!

    1. That's a real shame Roy, what were your suggestions?

      Delete
    2. To be fair, my suggestions were only poorly received as the trader I handed over all of my research and pictures to didn't make any profit on their range that covered my period already, so it would have been a poor investment for me. I wouldn't mind, it was a cool idea I had ... And then one month later a number of other companies released their own miniatures along the same lines that I'd suggested (they'd already thought of it earlier), so even if I had invested and got the three figure diorama sculpted and cast and released I probably would have failed as I couldn't have competed with the two, very large companies who beat me to it.

Apart from the above, Stu of Colonel Bill's gave me this advice. Make semi-nude women, or civilians. You may get people being outraged or offended, but they sell. And they keep selling. He then told me that he needed some more Viking Shield Maidens making, LOL!
