Urban Project - The Winchester, finished(ish)

Hi all

So as the title suggests this is the final look of the "Not" Winchester Arms that I have scratch built for my participation game coming up in early February.  I'm very much hoping that this is what the organisers are looking for, if not sorry....

The various floors simply stack on top of each other with a flat roof made out of blue foam and topped with my homemade textured paint.  To the base I have added a red telephone box from Blotz, this is in the film and I thought that it added a certain something to the piece.  The street that the pub sits on is also tree lined.  Rather than use up my limited tree stock permanently to the build, I made up a little base for one of my existing trees to sit in.

I also added a street lamp that I bought from China (more on these in another post)

Overall I'm pleased with the results and can see me playing out some interesting encounters for my own English ATZ campaign.

but that is it for now, coming up is more street sections for the project.

hope you enjoy

Urban Project - The Winchester (second floor)

Hi all

On to the next floor of my "Winchester" build - the second floor (third if you're from the US).  Again we don't get to see this part of the building in the film so I've got free rein to do what I want to do.  Obviously there needs to be bedrooms and a bathroom but the layout is my choice. I started with some of the smaller detail in this case, the beds and back made with the blue foam and a bit of paper I've come up with this...

This then was made into a mould with my "Blustuff", again my apologies as I didn't take any WiP photos so you can see them.  The bed moulds went better than my kitchen ones did and have come out halfway decent - lets say Year 7 art project rather than 4.  I also made single beds and wardrobes as well as a bedside table - these didn't come out quite so well, but still usable.

While this was going on I cut a square of blue foam for the floor and cut a hole for the stairs to come through.  I stuck with the same carpeting pattern as the previous floor but changed the "wall paper".  Again I used a tile effect for the bathroom.

Obviously I couldn't just have the stairs appear from the floor so made a matchstick and coffee stirrer balcony for the landing.

I also crafted some bathroom furniture out of blu foam and moulded it.

Add in towels made from kitchen towel soaked in cheap red paint.

In the master bedroom is the wardrobe made from Das and there is the bed from the mould.

The second bedroom is a younger persons, note the music posters and a wanted poster for a certain Gobbo and more "Walking Dead" comics.

and finally the overall view of the second floor...

the next post will be the finished model.

hope you enjoy

Urban Project - the Winchester - First floor

Hi all

welcome back to my Urban Project, as you may recall I'm building my version of the Winchester Arms from the glorious English zombie movie - Shaun of the Dead.  You can see the ground floor here. So this post is looking at the pub's first floor (second if you're in the US). As we don't get to see the "upstairs" floors of the Winchester in the film, it kind of gives me free rein to do what I like. On to the build...

Rather than go over the basics of building it, I'll just point out the differences.  This time the windows are arched, I've also used some cheap acrylic paint to paint the floor as if it were carpeted, so used a green basic block colour and then "stippled" a pattern onto it.  I also used a different colour "wallpaper" to break up the business and personal sides to the building.

I cut a hole for the stairwell from the ground floor (first floor).

I then set about making another set of stairs to the top floor. While these were drying I put some internal walls together and "tiled" the kitchen walls before making up a cooker and some kitchen units.

I even made a washing machine

before deciding to "mass produce" them with the moulds I've been playing around with along with sofas (which I showed in an earlier post) and bathroom furniture!

so instead we get these....

which I've made into moulds and produced some units made from Das, these will furnish my other buildings as well.  I haven't got any decent photos of the finished units, but they are a little rough and ready due to my inexperience with using the moulds.  They will pass muster but look a little like a kid made them for a Year 4 art project.......

I've must admit due to the huge scale of the task, I've not been as diligent as normal in taking WiP photos so I do apologise.  Instead here are the finished rooms.  First up the living room...

The sofas you should recognise from a previous post.  The huge TV is made from bluefoam scraps, with the coffee table made from mdf bases and a bit of bluefoam.  I printed off some magazine/comic covers to scatter on it.  I also printed off a cheeky little portrait and framed it with gold coloured  soft foam.

For the kitchen, I put in my Das units and some plates/cutlery as well as some homemade appliances. A cheeky breville anyone?

Finally I made an office for the landlord to do his accounts and keep his records in.  The desk is made from an mdf scrap and bluefoam and the chair is made in the same way as I did for my hospital project.

Over time, when I've got more of the other structures for the board built I will come back to these levels and start adding more detail that will make the rooms more interesting - bookshelves, appliances etc. But as I don't anticipate much interest in the interiors of the buildings at PAW, these details will be for my games and my enjoyment and must take a bit of a back seat.  I will still do some (I can't help myself) but it will not be to the level I would like just yet.

Anyway here is the overall view of the first floor, you can also see the balcony in the final photo!

Urban Project - The Winchester (ground floor)

Hi all

Now from my previous posts you will have gathered that the Urban Project has a pub as it's final objective - remind you of anything?? Yup, this is the game I have in mind for PAW 2018, based on a rather popular and extremely entertaining Zombie film based in the UK I decided I wanted a game that would be fun and engaging to play.  So anyone up for a race to the Winchester??

So how have I gone about putting together the board, well first of all I've sketched out a rough idea of what the overall board will look like.  This i'm not gonna show you until I've put all of the pieces together as I'm liable to change my mind due to cost and/or time restrictions.  All I did know is that I wanted the Winchester to be extra special, so I've gone all out!

This post will concentrate in looking at the ground floor and then the next two floors after that with a final post to look at it all together.

Firstly I'd just like to put out a disclaimer for all the purists out there who will decry my efforts as not authentic, not looking like the inside of the pub of "that film".  Yes you are right, firstly I'm pretty sure I would fall foul of all sorts of copyright issues and legal bulls*** surrounding ownership rights. Bearing in mind I'm a fan too go easy on me.  I'm not trying to get anything out of this other than a bit of enjoyment for me and anyone who wants to come and play in Plymouth next Feb, I'm just a bloke making this all out of his own pocket and with no intention of selling it in any way.  So yes it is not entirely authentic!

Secondly the lack of online material based around the inside of "that pub" is a real hinderance! So I just made it up! yup I just watched the film again (and again) and then just made it up.  Hopefully it's close enough that you'll like it anyway,,,,

Image result for the winchester pub

Firstly I needed to get lots of building material, but that can get kind of expensive.  For my hospital build I used 5mm foam board and that stuff is awesome but it is costly,  What I went for instead was blue foam.  This particular foam is 6mm deep and I bought it online for less than a tenner for two massive sheets roughly 5' x 4'. Yes I know its a bit more fragile and I know It's gonna need more work but to be honest for that price its a bargain.

When it arrived I measured out the dimensions - I've gone for 8" x 10" for the ground floor.

I then marked out the paving slabs of the road surrounding the pub.  I decided that the piece is going to go in the corner of the board, so only needs two side of pathways (I can always add some separately if required for other games).  I also decided to carpet tile the pub floor - I'm not sure what kind of flooring it has in the film.  I then used black emulsion (i bought a big tin, probably the most expensive part of this build!) to cover the whole thing!

while that was drying I set about making the bar, for this I used offcuts of the foam covered in coffee stirrers and tongue depressors.

I also cut out the stairs to the first floor.  Now as we don't see the other floors in the film, I've taken some 'licence' (ahem...) with them and imagined what would be in them.

for the walls I used blue foam, painted in emulsion and then "wall papered" with thick craft paper. The door detail I (crudely) carved in the foam with a coffee stirrer frame.

Not satisfied with plain walls, I went about adding the extra detail in.  I made wall lamps out of coffee stirrers, matchsticks and drinking straws.

and then printed some album covers and movie posters for wall art/////

I also put together some signs and billboards that will go on bus stops etc...

I wanted to make the sign a little special so embossed the name of the boozer onto some blue foam with a pencil.

I'm really sorry but I haven't taken too many photos of the rest of the build but the results are....

the jackpot machine and the pool table you've seen as well as the tables and chairs.  The bar was done in a similar way and the drink optics made out of milliput.  The toilet and sink were made out of blue foam as was the fridge and cabinets.

I also used a plastic rifle glued to a coffee stirrer to make a certain trophy that features prominently in the film...

Anyway, that's the ground floor.  I'll show you the outside when I do the finished building, as I'm really quite pleased with it.

hope you enjoy
