Starter Set Wars battle 6

hi all

As some of you may know, Damon and I have been playing a series of Bushido games using only the minis found in each factions starter sets.  We have dubbed this series - The Starter Set Wars, rather unoriginally....

However, this also coincided with the time we decided to record and post these battles on YouTube so people could get as enthused about the game as we are. Anyway fast forward to the now and we have just finished the last couple of battles and the link below is for battle 6, the last of the decider games teeing up our final battle.

The final battle will be uploaded soon

Dice Tower

Hi all

tabletop space is always a premium no matter the size of your table. I have an 8x4 foot table but it always covered in at least one game if not more, at the moment its currently groaning under the strain of an ATZ board, Bushido board and a dungeon crawl. I love throwing dice, I love rolling them by hand, I love the clatter of them as they tumble across the table which is why I can't comprehend how people could use Apps on phones or tablets which generate dice rolls.  However I'm constantly throwing dice on the floor, losing them or more annoyingly rolling a bunch of sixes that won't count because they're not on the table.  Now to get around it I built some dice trays which have addressed that problem, you can see how I did that here.

dice trays

This was a very satisfactory solution, but what if even that is too big.  Well a project has been buzzing around my head for a few weeks and I've managed to keep a lid on it successfully until I went along to a local board game club last week and the project came crashing back to the fore.  So I made this....

demonic portal

Hi all

Continuing on with the making of terrain for our upcoming D&D campaign and to supplement my collection I have built a demonic portal! This piece or something similar has been sitting in my brain for some time, inspired by Dave Stone's awesome "dragon emerging from well" pieces and other cracking terrain online.  It had got to the point where I was getting antsy about NOT building it and I couldn't concentrate on uni work etc so I busted out the blue foam and the video camera and spent  40 minutes or so, excluding drying time in between and knocked out this....

As has been the theme for this project, I recorded the build rather than take pics so if you want to see how it goes together then check out the link below.

Throwing down the gauntlet! - WiP 2

Hi all

I hope you've enjoyed/are enjoying the bank holiday weekend. In my last post on this project I posted a video on how i started to build my modular sewer/dungeon tiles for the 7TV2e game I'm planning, I'm also planning on using them in a summer D&D campaign that my daughter will be hosting (she doesn't know this yet.....bwahahaha).

Anyway, I've completed another video on how I've put the walls together and how they fit with the tiles.  Props to Luke Fellows (Luke's APS) and Steven Fletcher (Steve's Small World) for a couple of the techniques which I have blatantly (stolen) borrowed.

Here is the link to the video

Thursday post will be the next update from Chris's excellent Nordland project, which is shaping up beautifully and then we're at Salute! I hope to meet some of you there.

Throwing down the gauntlet! - WiP

Hi all

Progress has been made on the challenge that Rich threw down a little while back.  My response to the challenge was documented here with the intention of doing a 7TV2e game.  I was determined to produce a visually stunning game to enhance the excellent ruleset from Crooked Dice and decided to scratch build some modular boards for TMNT.  This idea has been sitting in my head for quite some time and just needed the right stimulus to bring it to fruition.

Anyhoo,  I've started work on the tiles and have documented how I've done this in a video format. Sorry to those of you who dislike YouTube or watching these things but I have very few still photos of the build.  The link to the first video on how I have started the base tiles is below, there will follow further videos on the walls and other details, plus painting.  My apologies for me wittering on, on the video, this is still very new to me - hopefully they will get better!

a big thank you

Hi all

a couple of "thank yous" today, just to get back into the swing of things.

Firstly, thank you for all the kind wishes and thoughts from those of you in the blogging world following my recent bereavement.  The very sudden loss of my mother was a shock to me and my family and the support I've received from friends, colleagues and fellow bloggers has been both humbling and much needed, I truly thank you all.

Secondly, I recently commented on another blog written by the awesome Lord Siwoc from Brains and Guts regarding my favourite of all films (even more than Mad Max 2) the most excellent - The Warriors.

Image result for The Warriors

The 1979 classic was one of the first films I ever saw on VHS video! and a film I watch at least 3 or 4 times a year.  Anyway onto the thank you, Clint from ANYTHING BUT A 1 saw my comment and informed me that he had a copy of the original book, not the one of the film but the one that inspired the film.  Not only that but he would send the copy to me for me to borrow - What a gent!  So thanks a million Clint, I'm enjoying it immensely :-)

With that in mind I'm now looking for 28mm miniatures of the Warriors.  There was a kickstarter a while back that never came to fruition by Ghetto Miniatures, I think there was an issue with copyright or something.  However they did come up with these beauts!

I need these......or something like them.  Any ideas gratefully received.

Lastly not a thank you but a link to my latest YouTube video, the 4th battle from "The Starter Set Wars" a series of Bushido games charting mine and Damon's mini tournament, you can thank ME later ;-P

Control Zones and other terrain pieces.

Hi all

Some background first, so missus Gobbo got some fancy chocolate mints over xmas she scoffed said chocs (with the help of a certain rotund Gobbo) and then took a long critical look at the packaging, without blinking an eye she hands it to me and said "that'll make something interesting for your funny little men stuff".  Having gotten used to the terminology that my better half has for our hobby, I shrugged off the "funny little men" comment and looked at what she handed me and by jove she was right!  This is what she gave me....

Right away I thought pond or portal!  Measuring the width of the piece the diameter of the wall is 4" from just inside the wall.  This is perfect as a zone of control in Bushido - so Koi pond it is!  Now I already have a Koi pond that I made some months ago for my Temple board but it really is a decorative piece only, I wanted this to have function, plus I had received some plastic Koi from Master-Crafted Miniatures for xmas (among other things by Ben).  First up it needed a base as the plastic is very thin and flimsy.  To that end I found a piece of 3mm MDF that had been part of a broken laptray and marked out a shape.  I liked the octagonal shape of the piece so replicated that for my base.

I then liberally covered the piece in homemade textured paint (PVA/Filler/paint/fine sand), idea courtesy of Luke Fellows of  Luke's APS.

With that done I then used filler on the base to create flagstones and gave the whole model another generous coat of textured paint to strengthen the plastic.

I then gave it a couple of washes with some homemade black ink.

Then drybrushed to achieve the stone look I wanted.  Then I made up some vines/creepers out of Lichen, flock and watered PVA and applied it to the model as well as some reeds made out of an old scrubbing brush and hotglued to the base, adding a Koi to the bottom hiding among the reeds.

To get this...

The next step was to fill the pond.  Now I could have used clear water effects to fill the pond but I wanted a slightly stagnant look to the water, no electric water pumps and filters here... So I used the cheap resin from Poundland to fill the pond adding 3 more Koi as I layered up the water.  I have to confess to rushing this bit as dinner was nearly ready so there are bubbles in the water but they don't look too out of place.

What I din't bank on was the plastic slightly melting in the heat of the reaction of the resin so I had o rebuild the wall a bit but this is the finished product.  Weirdly the models will fight across the top of the pond as they have to be in the zone to control it, but I like the idea of the fighters splashing through the serene pond in an effort to get at their foes, plus I like the look of it - so there!

Of course the scenarios in Bushido demand three such 4" zones so I had to put my thinking cap on. Yup I always had my circular disc cutter that my son had bought me for xmas and that I'd attempted to use before attached to a power drill resulting in the scars I'm currently sporting on my left hand...

Not quite back to the drawing board but a little revision to the earlier plan was required.  Attaching the cutter to a hand powered drill and switching the clear acrylic for 3mm MDF and I came up with a nifty little idea.  I wanted to have faction specific control zones to mark each as friendly, neutral and enemy.  What I mean by that is a zone that is marked up with that factions symbol so as to easily identify which is which.  This should look visually pleasing and give an idea to a third party watching the game where the action is.  Now rather than make up 8 zones (or more when the range increases) I thought I would make three zones (I added a third in case I couldn't fit the Koi pond, which would be neutral, in to the available space) that could be adapted each game.  Rather than a slow, picture by picture tutorial on how I did it, I actually recorded me making the last one and have posted it to my YouTube channel the link to which is here.

Now each faction can have their symbol in the middle of their zone, simple and effective I think.

Lastly, while i was in the terrain making zone (sorry) I picked up some pieces from the Pet's at Home aquarium section as they are on special 3 for 2.  With a little bit of tweaking they make very acceptable Bushido terrain pieces.

The Lucky Orc dice bag winner is.................

Hi all

the deadline for the draw was yesterday and this morning Mrs Gobbo drew the winner....

Michael Awdry

Sir Michael if you would like to email me at (get rid of the spacing and use the appropriate symbol)

da gobbos grotto (at) google mail (dot) com

and I can arrange the prize to find its way to Awdry Towers.

todays regular post has been postponed until Friday as I've just finished uploading a video battle report to my YouTube channel (it took a shattering 20 hours+ to upload).  This is battle 3 of the "Starter Set Wars" between Damon and myself.  It's actually the 5th game we've played for this series but 2 videos of my STS vs Ninjas haven't worked so we went with my new Tengu vs Jung Pirates, we have upped the quality to HD and actually finished the game too.  The game lasts for 90 mins so give yourself some time and as ever feel free to comment on either the game or the format.  For future games, there might be some 7TV2e or other genres so they won't always be Bushido, but Damon and I are determined to grow this excellent game and there isn't actually many videos on this genre (most are bloody WH40k - yawn).  However I am planning on putting up some terrain videos when I begin making my next board in a couple of months and happy to put together other (hobby related) videos that people would like to see.

The link to the vid is https://youtu.be/xBVWIfLeJo8

Please subscribe to the channel if you can, there is no cost and no i don't get any cash either....

Battle 2 and an apology

hi all

The first part of the title - below is the link to mine and Damon's second battle of "the Starter Set Wars"  a series of battles using only the starter sets for GCT Studio's Bushido that we have recorded and published on YouTube. The game was recorded at the same time as the first one so the quality is a little poor (the next recording session will be in HD - I hope) but it does lead onto the second part of the title the apology....

l-r Hanso, Miaro, Yariman of Ryu, Hiro (fromt), Jin (back)

Yumi, Rice Farmer of Ro-Kan, Master Ekusa (front), Atsuko (rear), Kenko
Sadly the camera ran out of the power half way through the game and the last few turns were lost :-(

But we went ahead and published the first turns anyway because.... well just because really, it's experience and the game was fun so we published!

Enjoy the bits of film we have, subscribe and like if you do.

A brave new step.....or a silly one!

hi all

Recently Damon and I decided to record a game of Bushido, it was a bit of an experiment and initially I wasn't too keen as to be polite "I have a face best suited to radio".  However due to the utter lack of Bushido battle reports I started to come around to the idea.  Now I'm a complete techno-phobe being much more analogue in my approach to life, the universe and everything so I left it up to Damon to sort out the recording gear, edit the video and send it to me to upload to a suitable platform. We wanted it to go out under a recognisable banner so I put it out under my "da Gobbo's Grotto" account, hence why he sent it to the techno-phobe.

So for our inaugural game we have come up with the first in a series of battles that we have taken to calling "The Starter Set Wars".  This is because we will only be using the models from each of the starter sets of each faction that we own, which currently are Temple of Ro-Kan, Prefecture of Ryu, The Savage Wave and the Cult of Yurei.  To this lot we will be adding two more in the new year in the form of the Tengu Descension and the Silvermoon Trade Syndicate, Rich has also got the Ito Clan but they are a long way from completion knowing Rich's painting speed..... (sorry buddy, lol). The first battle is between the Savage Wave - Demons called Oni and Bakemono (Gremlin like imps) and the Cult of Yurei - the undead monsters!

finally before I paste the link, the resolution is very low as this was a trial so the quality isn't good, hopefully this will improve with time depending on the reception this video has....
