Escape from Hospital, ATZ - An English Adventure part 3

The story so far.....

Part 1
Part 2

Tommy, back pressed firmly against the wall of the Imaging dept watched as the infected woman approached, her swollen abdomen clutched in one hand and frank blood trailing down her inner thighs.  He could only imagine the horror that had befallen this stricken mother-to-be as the infection tore not only her life away, but that of her unborn child as well. And what of the child? Was it still inside? Mutated and hungry for the flesh of another human being. That last thought caused Tommy to puke once again, a huge cascade of vomitus that covered the advancing ‘zombie’ causing it to slip and slide on the now treacherous floor before crashing to the floor. Seeing his opportunity, Tommy stepped around the infected woman and broke for the door and accelerated out of the room away from the horrific scene. Ahead of him the corridor stretched on seemingly forever before the glorious sight of the main doors came into view.

Anna pushed gently on the door marked “Isolation Room”, previous rooms filled with zombies causing her to proceed with caution. Leaving Andy to guard the entrance, she noticed that the smoke that had escaped from underneath the door was coming from a broken viewing screen attached to the wall to her left, a huge crack splitting the device into three pieces.  Bloody footprints led from the door deeper into the room until they reached a large clear plastic dividing curtain with a huge rent down the middle, blood hand prints covered the torn edges and almost hid the figure sitting forlornly on the rumpled hospital bed, his face covered by his hands. As Anna stepped further into the room, the man looked up from his hands spotting the medic and jumping to his feet.

“Baby” he cried, “Anna darling, thank god you're alive.”

Rushing to the curtain, he pulled at the tear in the plastic, widening the rent and allowing his big frame through the gap. At 6’4” and weighing 20+ stone, Chris was a big lad and he engulfed the now sobbing Paramedic in his enormous arms.  Anna sank gratefully into the embrace of her fiancĂ©, calling his name over and over again.  The sound of Andy's O2 cylinder bouncing off the head of a ‘zombie’ brought her to her senses and she stepped away from her partner, before grabbing his hand and pulling him toward the door. “We need to leave honey, the hospital is overrun by these things.” She said pointing with her free hand at the inert, crumpled form of the infected nurse at Gobbo’s feet.

Andy grunted as another ‘zombie’ crashed into him forcing him away from the doorway and further into the corridor. The reduced space hampered his swing and he failed to land a telling blow with his improvised weapon on the infected human.  Wildly blocking the claw-like fingernails of the creature and fending off its snapping jaws with the aluminium cylinder, Andy kicked the legs out from underneath the beast before stomping on its neck with his heavy work boots.

Anna pulled at Chris’s arm,  dragging him across the room passed a computer workstation and toward the door. A file, thick with medical notes and stamped with bio-hazard warnings caught her attention especially as her fiancĂ©es name was printed neatly at the top.  Grabbing the folder she flicked it open and started perusing the spidery handwriting of the attending doctor, cold sweat dripping down the back of her neck as she followed the clinical investigation of her partner, her mind racing Andy’s voice broke through her concentration, bringing her back to the current predicament with a crash, “Come on Putters, we need to get moving, there are more of those things coming and this situation is rapidly getting shittier.”

Then the lights went out……

Hospital beds

Finished the last major piece of the hospital jigsaw, the beds!

I bought this lot right at the start of my project from Grekwoods, but they were whisked away by the wife before I could get my hands on them. Now though they take their place in Jungville General Hospital as they open their doors to the general public (well the walking dead parts of it anyway)

Here they are in their proper setting.

Viking ward

Valkyrie ward

isolation suite

resuscitation and A&E
I think I will add cubicles to the wards as they look a little bare, but that will be later after I've got some game time with it as i'm champing at the bit!

Now to christen this piece i think i need to do something rather fun.  Perhaps a certain group of meddling kids could explore the once fine hospital?

Not much else to this post, but enjoy none the less.

Doctors and nurses

hi all

I've had quite a bit of time off recently, so have managed to get loads of stuff done in between uni assignments (or instead of... ;-P) hence the prolific blogging as well. I keep trying to stick to twice a week but the draft posts are piling up!

As part of my hospital project I got some figs from Grekwood miniatures. I basically bought their entire range.... Oops! Prior to this purchase though I only had two patients and three nurses, hardly enough for a hospital setting so I can't really be blamed for splurging.  So here we have the zombie part of the bundle, I'm yet to finish the beds so they will feature in a later post.

First up we have the doctors in white coats, these senior folks are more likely to be monitoring paperwork rather than patients. Guiding their more junior colleagues in their everyday tasks.

Next up we have the doctors in scrubs, these guys can be found on the emergency floors and surgeries at the sharp end!

Next we have the backbone of the hospital, the nurses. From left to right we have the staff nurses, in their traditional white smocks with navy piping. Next to them we have the ward sister in her navy smock and white piping. Lastly we have Matron, in her navy smock with red piping she cuts a very authorative figure.

Lastly we have the patients. Unable to run at the outbreak of the zombie virus due to their ailments, they were among the first to become infected.

My fave sculpt is the pregnant lady, very creepy! Note the gross trickle of blood, what kind of creature has she got in her tummy......

still WIP hospital

Hi all

this will be my last WIP for this project- Yippee!! mostly because apart from some detail on the inside it is largely done.  All of the rooms are now playable including the roof.  there is always going to be more bits and pieces i will add in order to add atmosphere to the piece - posters, blood splatters, weathering and the like but by and large it is complete. Now all I have to do is paint up all of the beds/trolleys i got from Grekwoods so that i can add them to the wards and A&E to give them substance.  That and the medical zombies that i've got (also Grekwoods) but that shouldn't take me long.

Throughout this project i have added objectives scattered around the hospital in order to keep scenarios fresh and get maximum use out of this huge piece of terrain (2 foot x 2 foot!!). So in the basement we have the sewer exit - can players escape this way? the morgue - is this where patient zero can be found or a loved one? the stores - what is in those bio bags? on the ground floor we have A&E, the canteen - can supplies be found? the chapel - is there a supernatural element? In the office - is there something on the hospital database that can help? and so on.

so onto the bits i've just finished i.e first floor and roof.  We have the pathology lab, a coffee stirrer shelving unit houses medical books made from foam just double over. On the desk i made a microscope and a rather poor petri dish (sorry, one of the bits i think i could have done a lot better) out of scraps of mdf and foam. The files on the desk refer to patient zero and could be a clue for a cure?
patient zero's file?
bio-science book on the shelf?
The next room is the isolation suite, after the x-ray machine & room i built this is my fave room.  The room will house one of the grekwood beds (yet to be painted) behind the plastic curtain, made out of heavy translucent plastic that some 4Ground buildings came in glued to a wooden frame.  The TV screen is cracked and broken - from the creature that broke through the curtain? with little wisps of smoke (cotton wool).

did patient zero stay here?

Next is the wards, Valkyrie (female) and Viking (male) wards, seperated by the nurses station.  This ward looks pretty bare without the beds (i know, i know they're on the painting table i promise!) but i did add some diagnostic monitoring on the walls where the beds will go.  I wanted this space to be fairly open as the whole piece can be a bit claustophobic, so no curtains around the beds.

Lastly on this floor we the surgical suite.  Originally it was going to be one long room but i decided to divide it up into the surgery and surgeons office,  Just a walk-through divide but i think it gives it a little more character.  The office holds more clues, inc a Top Secret document lying carelessly on the desk and a file on the floor that could be important?  The surgery itself holds a table of instruments (not a fan of what ive done here as they're a bit big but my sausage fingers can't do tiny!) and a surgeons table.  I researched a few surgical tables and ive seen a few from when i take patients into pPCI units, so i know it looks more like a dentists chair but believe me (those who have never had surgery) that modern surgeons often use tables that can move and manipulate patients around.

Lastly, lastly is the roof.  I showed you a WIP a few weeks ago of the spray i used on the roof and it has turned out really well (imho).  To that i have added the lift shaft complete with wind sock and detachable roof. The sock was just made up of paper towel, stiffened with pva glue and the flag pole was a cocktail stirrer that my wife found for me.  The helipad was scratch-built out of foamboard and
matchsticks that i hotglued together and weathered up a bit, unfortunately the paint has bowed the foamboard and it looks a bit sagged :(  I have added a couple of trap-doors where the stairs would exit, i could have put two more buildings on the roof but i think it would have crowded it up a bit. Finally I built a little tower, it was going to be water storage, but i changed it to gas storage just to liven things up and making it a bit more spicy........ the tower is made from a bottle top of a shampoo bottle, coffee stirrer legs and a drinking straw piping.

The whole building was weathered a little bit using moss that i made up using a recipe i found on sarcophagi's blog and some green and brown inks.  I'll probably do more at a later stage.

Jungville General on the board

it's massive!!
So that is the project pretty much done, as much as they things are ever done! All i need to do now is finish the beds and zombies and find an ambulance and a helicopter model!

hope you enjoy
