Raisa and friends

Hi all

So last week you met Ariniel, my Elven monk character for D&D. I've been trying to paint up a series of minis that can be used for adventurers so I'm gonna show a few all picked up at Salute! I haven't done backgrounds for these guys as they aren't for me to use but as an option for the others in the gaming group, I hope that they run with the background precedent that I have set.

The first and imho the most characterful is Raisa.  Raisa is a human spell caster of some kind (wizard, sorceress etc) and was sculpted by Kev White of Hasslefree Miniatures, I must admit she bears a striking resemblance to a movie character my niece might be obsessed with....

Sadly my photography has once again let me down so bear with me but hopefully you can see what a cracking model she is.  Rather than the soppy film effort, I wanted Raisa to look a little more fiery, so she naturally had to be a redhead!  Sorry no WiP shots...

Raisa and Lenore face my Vampire Lady in a magic duel.
So Raisa looks perfectly good to me, that was till I saw what this dude did for her.....

painted by Roman Lappat
Voodoo Raisa......some days I just want to throw my brushes away

Raisa is rarely seen without her older sister - Cara.  Where Raisa was drawn toward magic, Cara chose the way of the warrior.  Using her skills she protects her younger sister in combat, particularly while she is in the midst of spellcasting.

Cara steps in to divert the Countess' attention
anyway the last two models are a Dwarven cleric for Chris

and a Gnome ranger for my son.

both of these guys are blank canvases for the guys to create a background for these lovely Reaper Bones miniatures.

hope you enjoy

  1. VERY lovely Andy, very nice indeed. The sisters are masterly and very nicely modelled. Simply amazing pieces as well aren't they. Gnome guy is so cute I WANT him in my party hehe. Cleric is suitably Dwarfy, and all in all you have put together/assembled quite a formidble looking team there.

Who is the Countess? She looks like a real handful.

    1. They're looking rather groovy Hils. The Countess is Annabella Von Kriekveld and leads part of my Vampire Counts army for WFB. She is an Avatars of War miniature and one of my most favourite miniatures in my collection

  2. Annabella Von Kriekveld, I LOVE that name. I`m sure I`ve heard that name before, is that the official WFB name for her, I`m SURE I`ve heard it in the past.?

Andy, the sisters are incredible and the Gnome is simply gorgeous. Cleric is cool (I`m just not into Dwarves so much) but all told they are a dangerous looking team.

  3. these are really super mate, especially nice placed against the dungeon backdrop. Cara and Raisa are my favourites, but not sure which of the two I prefer, possibly Cara actually.

    Okay back to the grindstone **looks back down, as he continues assembling/painting Test of Honour miniatures** {{yep, the pre-order arrived yesterday, review on it all soon}

    1. Cara is lovely, I didn't even know they were sculpted as sisters and bought them separately at Salute! As I loved the minis so much

  4. A little advice for taking photos of minis, an easy way is to use a piece of white paper to put your miniature on and tip part of the paper up so there is a white background, its not the best way to do it but its a quick way to make it easier to see the mini and the camera can focus better on the mini :)

Nice minis none the less :)

    1. Thanks mate, I had started doing that but for some reason I stopped, I've no idea why....

    2. I guess its just easier to just take the camera out and take the picture then having to look for a piece of white paper and set things up ;)

The way you did it is very fast but has some drawbacks... but you already that.

  6. I like the Dwarf and Gnome those are a smashing pair of figures fit for any Dungeon.

I actually don't like the voodoo version of Raisa (though it is well painted), I prefer your version. So don't get upset (just "let it go", sorry).

    Cheers Roger.

  7. What a corking assortment of D&D minis, Andy. Love 'em all, especially the gnome ranger. Great stuff, and nice to see them dotted about your awesome scenery too. Really sets the scene imho.

  9. Excellent job on a a fantastic selection of characters! Looking forward to reading about their adventures this summer :-)
Dick beat me to the joke and "Froze" me out ;-)
I second Hil's opinion of AvK and I'm glad she asked the question - I have a lonely Count living in an empty fortified manor..... I must try and find him a similar companion :-)

  10. That's a nice selection of heroes you have there, Andy, but for me they are totally eclipsed by the beautiful Countess Annabella Von Kriekveld. I want to see and learn lot more about her. Hey, I am called Vampifan for a good reason.

By the way, Dave will be commenting later when he gets back home from my house, where we have had a great time gaming and chatting.

    2. Much appreciated re Annabelle, Andy.

Yes, we sure did. I'll cover it all in my next two blog posts.

  11. Raisa and Cara are rather more grown up than the characters on which they are modelled, aren't they :-) .

  12. What a great set of models Andy, loads of character in them. We all have points when we see someone else's work which can diminish in our opinion what we have achieved, but if your happy with the model you've painted and enjoy gaming with it, then you probably get more enjoyment than a competition painter does especially if they don't win anything with their entry.
Was a real blast at Bryan's and can't wait for you guy's to read the batrep !

    1. Yeah, you're probably right mate. I know I reach a reasonable standard so I'm usually happy with what I do. I thought this was a particularly clever interpretation though.

I'm really looking forward to the report of your day

    2. That's the trick being able to appreciate others work, finding new techniques to emulate, while utilising them within your own style. Could you imagine asking Picasso to paint like Michael Angelo ! Best advice I can give is never stop trying new things, they may not always work for you but will always increase your skillset. You already have the most important part HAVE FUN !
