this post is dedicated to some amazing pieces that I picked up at Salute! all three from Dave Stone's wargames terrain workshop. I chatted to Dave for quite some time at Salute! and he is a thoroughly nice chap and very, very talented. His stall was heaving with beautiful miniatures and I snaffled some crackers for my zombpoc/modern games, which I will show later and these brilliant items for my Dungeon project...
first of all I got this treasure chest, its a little big in scale but actually fits the bill for the end of dungeon crawl mega prize. The piece comes in a translucent blue resin in order to make the crystals really work.
All I did was paint the chest and base and added a very light turquoise/white mix highlight to the edges of the crystals before covering in a very generous coat of gloss varnish.
Alicia and Tregar find the treasure of a lifetime! |
Next I painted up the "Angel Monument", you may remember me showing more of Dave's graveyard terrain earlier this year and I was determined to get more, when I saw this one i was sold...
Shimmer and Lenore enter the vault of the Demon |
All I did with this figure was to paint it a medium grey, wash it in black ink and then add my homemade moss mixture to it and voila!
Lastly is my favourite piece and one that when I saw it, just had to have it! (sorry Jez - it was just TOO shiny) At just £8 I think it is an absolute bargain and is a beautiful figure both to paint and just as a piece in itself - stand by for quite a few photos of how it progressed. It can be used of course as a dragon emerging from a well (I also have a dragon piece in similar colours) or as a realistic onamental fountain....
The bottom of the wall is made up of the same translucent resin as the chest, it requires some special painting but all I did was email Dave and he gave me some very useful tips that meant it turned out perfectly (imho). I really love this piece and it will take pride and place among, what I hope will be an extensive Dragon collection.
Just before I go, I have posted a video or two on YouTube with how I've put together a bridge for the sewer tiles, there is an issue with the sound in the middle of the build where You Tube blocked the use of a song I had playing in the background. In order to bypass this I was forced to remove audio and fluffed the overlay of music, so it gets a bit rubbish but it does come back for the last segment and certainly where I share how the whole board looks so it is worth sticking with imho. Its all a bit of a learning curve - click on the link below. The second video is how I made some traps.

Great work on the pieces Andy, and glad the tips proved useful
ReplyDeletethanks Dave, hopefully I've done them proud!
DeleteYou most certainly have
Deletewow, that terrain is excellent. Really nice bag there Andy. Must have been awesome to see it all live at Salute and chat with the creator himself.
ReplyDeleteThe Dragon is simply stunning too.
Dave's Dragon range needs to be seen in person Steve, it is awesome both in size and detail. They are simply stunning, you're right!
DeleteGreat work on that dungeon.
ReplyDeletethanks Cedric, I can't wait to get gaming on it. Some really nice home made pieces coming too!
DeleteSuper stuff.
ReplyDeletecheers T :)
DeleteNice! Especially the chest!
ReplyDeleteit's a lovely piece Gordon, a bit on the big side but that doesn't matter at all as it paints up so nicely and doesn't look out of place.
DeleteI'm never going to live that down now, am I? *sigh*
ReplyDeleteSome lovely pieces there, Andy. I did spend some time browsing Dave's stall at Salute and admit to being tempted by several items, but remained strong...this time. However, when my focus changes back to Oriental gaming, I probably WILL be purchasing some items. Just need to decide which of the two finishes I go for in respect of the Temple Dogs...
no Jez you're not.... lol
DeleteAnyway I listened to the Crow and got me some juicy Pandas from Black Hat, that should drag you back to oriental gaming sharpish!
I've just remembered that Hasslefree do a 'Mystic Warrior Panda' in their Sci-fi range. Just in case you need another one...lol
DeleteVery nice love that chest and the dragon.
ReplyDeleteThey are very nice Simon, very nice!
DeleteExcellent terrain dude, can`t wait to see the modern stuff
ReplyDeleteDuuuuudde, missed you on here Bob! Check out my last few posts on ATZ, that should whet your appetite :-)
DeleteI do like the treasure chest. But alas Have no use for the others at this time.
ReplyDeleteI do like the dragon graveyard (on his web site) so that may be a future purchase.
It is very good isn't it? My next purchase has to be the oriental dragon but I'm gonna have to save up my pennies for that bad boy and I'm a bit worried about how he'll travel
DeleteWith custom cut sponge around the base, should travel fine. Just make sure nothing around the face, as the Fu Manchu whiskers are it's weakest point
DeleteStill got to find space in the budget, stop teasing Dave! ;-P
DeleteSorry mate, scenery looks great ! ; )
DeleteYou bagged yourself some great scenery pieces there, Andy. It's always a pleasure to see Dave's work receiving the attention it deserves. There is so much stuff in his store I want to buy.
ReplyDeleteThe problem I found was sticking to my budget, the dragons - they look so pretty! In real life they are even better. Dave has admitted that his photographs are not the best, tbh he needs to redo them because they seriously don't do his models justice!
DeleteThat dragon is absolutely superb, I just love the hand on the side of the well, what a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteIt's a terrific touch and enhanced by the painting tips (thanks Dave) which shows the arm under the translucent water - sadly you can't see it in the photos
DeleteWhat a marvellous advertisement for Dave's superb terrain, Andy. Great-looking stuff and extremely well painted too. Dave's modelling/painting advice is tip top stuff too, so a great idea to give him a shout beforehand too!!
ReplyDeleteHis advice really helped Simon, especially around showing the water to the best effect :-)
DeleteWow, those look excellent. Well done dGG!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rod, appreciate it :)
DeleteGreat additions to have and will find many uses I'm sure. It's fairly obvious how much you love that dragon though - great brushwork!
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I took some extra time on the dragon Joe, he lends himself to that effort mate, especially the scales!
